The umubano family emerged after a split from the amahoro group following a leadership dispute between silverbacks Charles and Ubumwe. The name “Umubano” means “togetherness” or “neighborliness.” Visitors are often fascinated by the group’s unique history and strong family bonds.
The Sabyinyo family is one of the easiest gorilla groups to track due to its relatively accessible location on the slopes of Mount Sabyinyo. Known for its impressive silverbacks and stable family structure, this group offers excellent opportunities for photography and close observation.
The Hirwa family was formed from members of the sabyinyo group. Its name translates to “lucky one” in Kinyarwanda. This family gained international attention after the rare birth of twins, making it one of the most celebrated gorilla groups in the park.
The Bwenge family is named after its founding silverback, Bwenge, whose name means “wisdom.” Known for its resilience and inspiring history, this group provides visitors with an opportunity to observe strong leadership and close family interactions.
The ugenda family is one of the most mobile gorilla groups in volcanoes national park. Its name means “on the move,” reflecting the family’s tendency to travel frequently throughout its territory. Trekking this family can be particularly adventurous and rewarding.
Named after the famous silverback Titus, this family holds a special place in Rwanda’s conservation history. Titus survived numerous challenges during his lifetime and became one of the most recognized gorillas in the virunga region. Today, his legacy continues through the descendants that remain within the family group.
